GQ031 – GodanQuest is One-Month Old
Yep. It’s true. I made it a whole month. Godan Quest is one-month old – and I am one-month older.
To tell the truth – it’s gone fast. Can’t believe a month has gone by. I guess it highlights (as if I need to be reminded) that the march toward age 60 is relentless.
Am I the same person that started this quest a month ago? Basically. Don’t get me wrong - we absolutely should celebrate milestones. And one-month is cause for celebration…
But it is only a month.
Progress in life is mostly slow. Results are generally not produced by huge bouts of effort – but by commitment, dedication and consistency. Results in Real Life mostly come from the “Turtle model” while most of us generally only have enough character and patience to execute the “Hare model”. So far, one-month only constitutes the beginnings of true Turtle-model mentality. It only gives us a clue as to what will happen. It gives hope. Will I stay committed to my quest?
All I can do is do it – one-day, one-week, one-month at a time.
Here is the form of Geri done from 80 – 112 BPM, then at 138 BPM – then back down to 112 BPM (and a couple bloopers)…
Note: When the VDO says “Geri 112 BPM – Yesterday’s max”, it doesn’t mean yesterday.
It means the max for the previous day’s workout – the September 21 workout.
Did I make progress yesterday? You bet. My Geri feels so much better. And I learned some things about body positioning and setup. I did my knee rehab routine, didn’t eat after 8:30 and did my 60-minute Sanchin-Ryu workout.
Did I make progress for the month? Yes. My knees still have some problems – but they’re a lot better. They are at least pretty functional. I also went to the health club three times a week. Sure, no one would notice any difference yet – but, I’m sure that inside, my body is making microscopic improvements that will affect my health, strength and stamina.
And I did meaningful karate workouts every day for a month. So I’m sure, in some way, I’m better at it. Again – not that anyone could notice. But I’m developing habits and - I know I made improvements – daily improvements. And, truth be told, that’s all that’s necessary for the Turtle model to work.
Till next time, I seek peace,
Sensei Bob Matthews
